HME Filters are used in patients with tracheostomy tubes to create the necessary heat and moisture for the respiratory tract. Normally, this process is done through the nose, where the passing air is filtered, cleaned, and humidified. This prevents the air going to the lungs from harming the respiratory tract. Patients with tracheostomy tubes cannot breathe through their noses, so this process needs to be done by the HME Filter.

Bacterial filters are used in the general intensive care unit to protect both the patient and the ventilator from cross-contamination.
